'Paradise Lost' Filmmakers React to Release of West Memphis 3

“To see our work culminate in the righting of this tragic miscarriage of justice is more than a filmmaker could ask for,” says director Joe Berlinger.
Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky were in Jonesboro, Ark., Friday to witness the release of Jason Baldwin, Damien Echols and Jessie Misskelly and to film the poignant ending to their third and final film about the case.
The three men, who were incarcerated for 18 years, were convicted in the 1993 murders of three eight-year-old boys who were found next to a muddy creek in the wooded Robin Hood Hills area of West Memphis, Ark.
Berlinger and Sinofsky’s first film in 1996, Paradise Lost: The Child Murders of Robin Hood Hills, galvanized support for the West Memphis 3 with a bevy of Hollywood A-listers, including Johnny Depp and Peter Jackson, turning the case into a cause célèbre. Berlinger and Sinofsky stayed with the case, producing a follow-up – Paradise Lost 2: Revelations – in 2000. Both films were shown on HBO. And the third and final installment -- Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory – will air on the network in January. It will recount the entire saga; from the arrests in 1993 to the growing movement, through the appeals process and the uncovering of new evidence and will conclude with their release. Purgatory is scheduled to premiere next month at the Toronto International Film Festival

Pentagon’s Lightning Gun Sold for Scraps
There was a time, not all that long ago, when the Pentagon sank tens of millions of dollars into remote-controlled lightning guns that it hoped would fry insurgent bombs before they killed any more troops. Now, disassembled parts from the one-time wonder-weapons are being sold on eBay. At least one buyer snatched up the gear, hoping to use it in his latest art project for Burning Man.
All of which would make for a funny little story, if that buyer didn’t discover that the multimillion dollar “Joint Improvised Explosive Device Neutralizers,” or JINs, were kluged together from third-rate commercial electronics, and controlled by open Wi-Fi signals. In other words, the Pentagon didn’t just overpay for a flawed weapon. On the off-chance the JIN ever worked, the insurgents could control it, too.

Capybara sighting: Officials may set traps for giant rodents
Officials in the Paso Robles area say they may set traps after workers at a wastewater plant spotted a capybara three weeks ago.
Wardens are prepared to set live traps for the animal, said Lt. Todd Tognazzini of the Department of Fish and Game., and relocate it to a local nonprofit animal group. Before traps can be set, however, there must be more confirmed sightings of the animal so officials can narrow down the area where it lives.
In the meantime, Tognazzini said, anyone who spots the animal should contact authorities –- and keep their distance. Though capybaras (an example of the rodent is pictured above) aren’t considered predatory toward humans, any wild animal should be treated with extra caution, he said.
“Like any wild animal, they’re going to defend themselves, so we wouldn’t want anybody to get close to it,” Tognazzini said.
Capybaras are the world’s largest rodents -– they can reach the size of a small dog -– and are often described as a mix between a rat and a guinea pig. They’re nocturnal and semi-aquatic, and prefer habits with dense vegetation and access to water. They are illegal to own as a pet in California.

Canes Football Rocked By 50K Scandal
Vince Wilfork, now the defensive lineman for the Patriots, was on the list of 72, and allegedly received $50,000 during his junior season as a Cane in return for signing with Axcess Sports, Shapiro’s agency.

“[I asked Wilfork] ‘What’s it going to take for [you[ to sign with Axcess [Sports]?’ We gave him $50,000 in cash. He was in the middle of his junior [season]. After that, I was at the draft day party with him — which we put together for him,” Shapiro told Yahoo! Sports.
Yahoo! Sports conducted an 11-month investigation into Shapiro’s allegations that implicated members of Miami’s football and basketball programs.
Other well-known players implicated include Devin Hester, Frank Gore, Kellen Winslow Jr., Jonathan Vilma, and Willis McGahee.
Shapiro’s claims include numerous NCAA violations including giving players money, lodging, food, and other gifts.
The University of Miami said that it’s cooperating with the NCAA on the matter.
“When Shapiro made his allegations nearly a year ago, he and his attorneys refused to provide any facts to the university,” Chris Freet, Miami AD for communications told Yahoo! Sports. “We notified the NCAA enforcement officials of these allegations. We are fully cooperating with the NCAA and are conducting a joint investigation. We take these matters very seriously.”

Virginia health officials say a child has died of a brain infection from a microscopic bug, sometimes called a “brain-eating amoeba,” that lives in stagnant water.

State health officials say a Virginian has been diagnosed with a rare infection associated with a type of amoeba known as Naegleria fowleri that lives in stagnant water.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that it’s sometimes called “brain-eating amoeba” because it travels up the nose and destroys brain tissue, almost always causing meningitis.
"Sadly, we have had a Naegleria infection in Virginia this summer," Dr. Keri Hall, state epidemiologist at the Virginia Department of Health, said in statement. "It's important that people be aware of… safe swimming messages.”
In a health advisory issued Saturday, state health officials said the amoeba proliferates in stagnant freshwater lakes, ponds, streams and rivers when temperatures climb into the 80s. They say people should take safety precautions when swimming, including showering with soap before and after and being careful not to swallow pool, lake or river water

Japanese student OVER nIAgArA IS DEAD ;(
Niagara Falls sweeps away Japanese student
In the latest bizarre national park death this summer, a Japanese student was swept to her presumed death at Niagara Falls after she fell from a railing Sunday night along the Canadian side of the Niagara River.
According to surveillance footage and eyewitnesses, the student climbed onto the railing near a viewing area known as Table Rock to take pictures at around 8:30 p.m., and lost her footing when she stood up. The woman fell into the river 80 feet upstream from the brink of the falls and was swept over.
Officials are still looking for her body.
Web site The Stir pointed out that this death could make 2011 the deadliest summer on record. It adds to the list glacier, fallen tree, and lightning accidents. The deadliest summer could lead to the most disastrous century, as the Post’s Joel Achenbach predicted in Slate:

Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward have already begun rehearsals for a live tour and new studio album.
Iommi told the Birmingham Mail: "We're really looking forward to it and I think the stuff we've been writing is really good. It's more back to the old original stuff.'
The guitarist, who is the sole ever-present member of the band throughout its history, added of the long-rumored reunion: "It's all been very hush-hush. Ozzy's been the worst at trying to hold it back.
"He's doing a lot of TV and he's being asked stuff about a reunion and he's going, 'Well I never say never'. He told me, 'I don't know what to say'."
Frontman Osbourne first left the band in 1979 and was replaced by Ronnie James Dio. Osbourne rejoined the group in 1997 and played several live dates until leaving again in 2006.
Dio again replaced Osbourne soon after and the band toured as Heaven & Hell, before Dio died in May 2010 after losing his battle with stomach cancer.

Today 10:18 AM PDT by Peter Gicas

Reese Witherspoon showed off her sexy self over the weekend by way of a two-piece bikini while vacationing in Hawaii with her two children and new hubby, Jim Toth.
But it wasn't just the Oscar winner's cute curves that were on display as she enjoyed a little fun in the sun.
Reese also offered up a much better glimpse than the one we got over the Fourth of July weekend of her new tummy tattoo.
Yup. When it comes to hot bods, this Election star definitely gets our vote!

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Silent mourners with heads bowed and yellow-orange candlelight leading the way paid their respects to Elvis Presley at his grave at Graceland, his longtime Memphis home, to remember the 34th anniversary of his sudden death.
Thousands of Elvis devotees, candles in hand, walked in the humid night to the graves of Elvis and his relatives, some wiping away tears as they filed past. Flower arrangements and heart-shaped wreaths decorated the burial site as “If I Can Dream” and other songs played softly in the background.
The vigil was to extend past midnight and into Tuesday morning, marking the anniversary of the King’s death on Aug. 16, 1977. The vigil is the main draw of “Elvis Week,” and some waited hours outside the stately mansion for the procession to start.
Paula Penna came with her family from Campinas, Brazil, for her sixth vigil. Penna, who met her Brazilian husband in an Elvis fan club, cried and hugged him, her sister and aunt after paying her respects.
She said Elvis songs have helped her family though good and bad. All four have Elvis tattoos.
“Elvis music keeps the family together,” said Penna, who also was born on Aug. 16 and will celebrate her 27th birthday Tuesday. “I promised to come every year to pay tribute to Elvis because he is very important to the family life.”

Marcos Ambrose gets his first win in NASCAR at Watkins Glen: Fan’s take
By K.C. Dermody, Yahoo! Contributor Network39 minutes ago
For the first time in at least several weeks, one of the drivers that was predicted to win, actually captured the victory. After the race at Watkins Glen International was rescheduled for Monday due to a rain delay, Marcos Ambrose crossed the finish-line ahead of all the other drivers to score his first win in NASCAR's prestigious Sprint Cup Series.
This season in NASCAR has certainly been one for first time winners to take the prize. The most recent was Paul Menard who captured his first victory at the Brickyard 400 on July 31st. It was 20-year old Trevor Bayne who had his very first win at the renowned Daytona 500, and Regan Smith astonished everyone by taking the Southern 500. Then there is David Ragan who stole the victory in the second race at Daytona, in the Coke Zero 400.
Luck was on the side of Ambrose this time, as he'd come close to winning a number of times before. Kyle Busch, who had taken the pole on Saturday, led for much of the race, but ended in third after Ambrose passed both Busch and Brad Keselowski in the final laps.
Ambrose's win at the Heluva Good Sour Cream Dips 500 puts him in contention for one of two wild card spots in the race to the Chase. There are only four races left until the playoffs begin at Chicagoland on September 18.

The BodogBrand,online casinos
From a development perspective, online casinos have stood still for years despite being the biggest revenue drivers in terms of both margin and turnover for most operators. The BodogBrand now intends to overhaul the online casino market in the same way it did with poker.
During the last couple of years the Bodog Brand Licensees took a fresh look at where the online poker market was heading and together agreed to make three fundamental changes, namely: a total restructuring of the rake back system, blocking data mining sites and player informationas well as a complete u-turn on the type of player that rooms seek to attract. Depositors, not 'pros', held the key to a successful and fun poker experience. These changes were quickly adopted by other major operators in the industry.
Equally, sports betting has seen in-play wagering and mobile apps give the genre a new lease of life to the extent that even the once all-powerful betting exchanges are now becoming traditional bookmakers themselves.
Now it's the casino's turn to shine. Bodog Asia is currently building itsown live dealer studio, allowing players a host of advantages that have been impossible to do before: tables tailored to specific players and player groups, the ability to choose your favourite dealer, random bonuses with live concessions and, of course, beautiful women.
This week the Bodog Brand's new casino lobby was launched by Bodog.co.uk, Bodog.ca and Bodog.eu as the first phase of a multi-tiered revamp of the entire online casino experience which it is hoped will, like poker before, become the industry standard.
Specifically, the new lobby will offer players the ability to find the games they want quickly via a dynamic search bar andsimplified navigation and also allow players a comprehensive overview of all games and their individual features before theyclick thanks to a brand new game spy preview feature.
