This Week: We're Now Vernacular!

Whew, moving is hard work. Changing apartments, jobs, or even blog names is more difficult than it looks.

This is our last night, as it were, in the empty apartment that is now Pub Buzz, and our much-loved address (double b, double z). Tomorrow, we wake up in the land of Vernacular-- so please change your browser bookmarks to find us at our new location:

http://vernacularlit.blogspot.com

So continue to read, post your comments, and email us your publishing and writing news and snark at vernacularlit@gmail.com. And with your help, we'll get bigger, better, and more explosive than we've ever been before!

Congrats also to Jillian D'Urso for thinking up the new name for Emerson's literary blog-- stay tuned to find out which complimentary drink she chooses at the Tam.

And stay tuned for the next chapter of our life as a blog-- as we hit the road and explore the big cities, and take the nation by storm! (I'm imaging Fievel goes west, in An American Tail...)

But whatever our name, and wherever our adventures make take us, we'll still be the Emerson and Boston literary blog that keeps you updated on anything and everything worth knowing about the publishing world. And we'll continue to give you the highlights (and low points) of the wild lives of young writers and publishing innovators. So thanks for sharing this first chapter with us, and I look forward to so many more!!!

Previously On Pub Buzz...

"What's In a Name?"

W
hy do we care so damn much about names? Labels, titles, surnames, nicknames, brand names--sometimes I think we're so blinded by the packaging of an item (and its marketing budget) that we lose track of what's inside. But I can't help but think of Shakespeare's classic (and somewhat cliché) quandary, Would a rose of any other name smell so sweet?

Well, I hope our blog will smell even sweeter, because it's time to change our name! As we've grow in content and readership, we've found that we inadvertently stepped on a few toes... I turn the mic over to my new and dear friend Kurt Aldag, who emailed us with his request that we increase our awesomeness quotient and not trespass on his:

Dear
Emerson College MA and MFA Grad Students,

PubBuzz (www.pubbuzz.com) is the brand name for an online video news network. The PubBuzz video news network has been online since 2003. The site features videos of over 350 authors reading from and talking about their work at book fairs around the world.

Please find another name for your column to avoid any confusion.

Thank you,

Kurt Aldag
iReadNet, Inc.

www.ireadnet.com

PS, Kurt: we're a literary and publishing blog, not a column. I'd refer you to Jeffrey Seglin, professor of Column Writing at Emerson College (and resident ethicist, giver of advice, and grand master of snark for this establishment), to help you distinguish the difference between the two.

ANYWAY, we decided that Kurt or no Kurt, it was time to make a change. So we now turn to you, dear Pub Buzz reader! We need YOUR help, yes yours, to help us re-name our blog and turn over a new leaf. Now that you know what we do and how the blog goes, how would you package us?

Please reply in the Comments section of this post with your favorite new name for us. Send us your best suggestions (no limit, unless it gets ridiculous) through Monday, June 7, and then come back to vote on your favorite name from the top four contenders starting Tuesday, June 8.

If you are the lucky one who provides the next (and last) name for this blog, I will personally buy you a drink of your choice at the Tam. Also, Seglin might throw in a steak knife or two. If you are not a Bostonian, we'll figure out a prize that isn't a canister of alcohol and will mail it to you.

Basically, this is your big chance to name Emerson's up-and-coming literary blog. Get on our VIP list for life. Thanks, fabulous readers!

"Re-Decision 2008: Cast Your Vote Now!"

In the grand spirit of this spring's exciting and excruciatingly protracted Democratic Primary Season, we present the Pub Buzz Re-Decision 2008! We invite you now to cast your ballot for the new name for this blog. Which new candidate should reign supreme? Vote in our poll to the right!

Thanks to everyone who contributed suggestions for blog names-- narrowing them down to the Final Four was an incredibly difficult decision. Stay tuned, now, for the announcement of the blog's new name, and of course, all of that other new stuff that comes with a name change-- new url, new t-shirts, bumper stickers.... oh wait, we don't have to campaign again in November.

(Poll stays open until Sunday, June 15, at 11:59 pm, Eastern Time. Votes will be counted in proportion to how much literature is read by your county, percentage of Republicans in your household, and whether you know any superdelegates. Don't worry, our incredibly advanced blog software can tell us all of these vital stats about you.)

By a landslide. A relative landslide. So stay tuned for the upcoming transition to "Vernacular: The Emerson Literary Blog," with details on how to get to our new location. Thanks again to all who contributed suggestions for names, and who annoyed their friends about voting-- we had over 50 readers cast their votes!

Also, this just in from WLP Alum Morgan First, CEO and Publisher of Map Boston:

I graduated from Emerson is Dec 05 and started my own small publishing company. You can check out my site at www.mapboston.com. I was recently featured in the June issue of the Boston Women's Business Journal. Additionally I print a book called MAP BOSTON and our third issue will be out this fall!
